In life is there no better meal than mussels, in a wine butter garlic sauce, crispy frites and bread.
So why does mussel bar stand out past all the other Belgian places, frankly I don't know. Besides Brasserie Beck I do not think I have been to any of the other Belgian Places. I do know that the mussels were perfectly cooked and I could have drank the broth all day long. I had the classic sauce and it had a whole roasted garlic in it and yes it did make it extra awesome.
The fries were a bit ordinary. i thought they would have been more hand made and less fats food tasting. It came with belgian mayo and could be dipped well into the mussel broth.
We went to an early dinner hoping to beat the crowds but Mussel Bar was packed. Apparently it was free Kozzie night for the first 100 hundred dinner guests.
They were playing classic rock and showing a Led Zeppelin Concert show on their televisions. I like Zeppelin when I am drinking whiskey not so much when I am eating continental food. I guess Zeppelin would be a burger music. Mussel music should be the Grateful Dead or Weezer, El Scorcho and frites goes perfectly.
Our server was attentive but not over bearing.
Mussel Bar has a different vibe than most Bethesda dinner spots. It really felt like you were out in the city but you didn't have to deal with the muggers and lack of parking. Plus there was a couple of live bands and a I walked to the restaurant I could I have sworn i heard someone singing The Sundays.
I am going to go back and try the curry mussels. Its good night out.
